While municipalities often boast the merits of growing food with sewage sludge (also known as biosolids), the FDA has just done three studies showing a problem with our food being contaminated with with perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl, some with very high levels.

Colin O’Neil & David Andrews from EWG wrote last week in PFAS Central that “A recent investigation by the Food and Drug Administration found toxic per- and poly- fluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, in food, including meat, seafood and dairy products; sweet potatoes; pineapples; leafy greens, and chocolate cake with icing.” [1].

Where are these PFAS coming from and does the organic standard protect us from these chemicals?

Where do PFAS come from?

Exposure from PFAS in humans are thought to originate from agricultural products grown with sewage sludge, also called biosolids, from food packaging and from drinking water polluted with these chemicals.

<< The FDA detected PFOS in approximately half of the meat and seafood products; PFPeA in chocolate milk and high levels in chocolate cake with icing; PFBA in pineapple; and PFHxS in sweet potato. >> [2]

They are also used in various commercial products. The EPA has identified more than 600 chemically similar PFAS compounds in active commercial use.

<<Almost half of the seven million tons of sewage sludge generated in the U.S. every year are applied to land, including on farm fields. >> [1].

Even in Canada municipalities recycle sewage sludge into agricultural products [ref https://www.ledroit.com/actualites/boues-de-la-station-depuration-de-granby-de-dechets-a-engrais-e24a30f2c4b2beb9769b9538228d6e10].

Not all contamination came from agriculture — contaminated chocolate icing was thought to originate from another source: << 17,640 parts per trillion (ppt) of perfluoro-n-pentanoic acid (PFPeA) in chocolate cake with icing. These levels suggest that the cake was contaminated from the intentional use of the chemical to greaseproof paper that contacted the cake rather than from an environmental source. >> [ref http://blogs.edf.org/health/2019/06/03/fda-high-levels-pfas-chocolate-cake/]

What are PFAS?

These are molecules containing multiple (13 to 17) fluorine atoms along with ~10 other basic atoms like carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. Unfortunately these man-made chemicals do not break down in nature; they are bio-resistant[3][4] and are associated with a long list of health issues.

PFAS is the whole group of per- and poly- fluoroalkyl substances. It includes man-made chemicals like PFOA, PFOS, GenX, and many others [ref https://www.epa.gov/pfas/basic-information-pfas].

FFOS is a short for Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid. They are often used as a surfactant, or more precisely fluorosurfactant.

PFOA are also known as Perfluorooctanoic acid and also affectionately known as C8. In french they are called APFO (acide perfluorooctanoïque). They are also fluorosurfactants. They are used among other things in the fabrication of cookware and strain-resistant carpets, microwave popcorn bags, some brands of dental-floss, floor wax, fire fighting foam and many more items. [5][6]. Those are now banned in US and Canada, although it is not mentionned with what it has been replaced [ref http://www.scientifique-en-chef.gouv.qc.ca/impacts/ddr_poeles-antiadhesives-faut-il-se-mefier-de-lapfo/]

While more anti-stick cookware are now manufactured without PFOA, as previously said, the EPA has identified more than 600 chemically similar PFAS compounds in active commercial use but has set no legal limits or health advisories for those chemicals in water, air or consumer products[2]. It might be just like when they replaced BPA with BPS and now label things as “BPA free”.

What are the Health Risks of PFAS

PFAS have been associated with cancer, reproductive harm, developmental harm, high cholesterol, damage to the immune system, hormone disruption, and liver and kidney damage. A top U.S. toxicologist now goes beyond just association and mention causal relationship with diseases [ref https://theintercept.com/2019/10/24/pfas-toxicologist/]. << In my mind, PFAS cause health effects because you have the same kind of effects reported in multiple studies in multiple populations >>.

Remember the documentary on PFOA and birth defects in children of mothers working in a Teflon factory?

Watch it here.

Some scientists who work with biosolids (sewage sludge), with all their wisdom and lack of conflict of interests, mention that it is safe and useful.

<< Scientists say that the evidence overwhelmingly suggests that sludge is safe and useful. >> [7].

Recall when they found PFOA (aka C8) in water near DuPont factory. DuPont mentioned in a letter to residents that C8 was found in public water but according to their standards it wasn’t harmful [3].

Immune Effects

If you take time to read the chapter 2 of the ATSDR Toxicological Profile for Perfluoroalkyls document, you will see that perfluoroalyls have been shown to decrease antibody response to vaccines. One might pose the hypothesis that PFAS are causing an increase in vaccine-preventable diseases worldwide.

<< Immune effects. Evidence is suggestive of a link between serum PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, and PFDeA levels and decreased antibody responses to vaccines. A possible link between serum PFOA levels and increased risk of asthma diagnosis has also been found >> [ref https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/ToxProfiles/tp200-c2.pdf]

We are looking forward to look at the result of this larger study.

Does Organic Agriculture Allows Sewage Sludge?

Luckily if you have been eating organic certified food, sewage sludge is not only prohibited but frowned upon by organic farmers.

<< In addition, USDA organic standards require that food cannot be grown in sewage sludge. >> [8]

<< Synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, and genetic engineering may not be used. >> [9]

<< [Organic farmers] resolutely oppose allowing its use under the final organic standards rule. >> [10]

In 1997 the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency tried to include a proposition to allow “high quality biosolids” (i.e., sewage sludge) to be used in organic food production [10]. Fortunately it did not pass and today the USDA organic standard still rejects sewage. Note that other countries have their own organic regulations, that often surpasses in safety the United State one.

Food for Thoughts

One problem with organic agriculture is that large agro-companies are often organic producers themselves. Some are actively lobbying to dilute the organic standard, and at the same time when they succeed, other influential players – maybe even the same shareholders – uses these deregulation to “expose” that the organic standard does not protect consumers better, failing to mention how it was lobbying that caused the USDA Organic Standard to have these loopholes in the first place.

Although from a rational point of view, growing organic is the only way that make sense, the majority of the population still don’t know what organic really is. In our mind, the way food is grown is not representative of reality.

The harsh chemical that our food grows in is in fact chemical warfare weapon designed during the war and later converted to agriculture products. In fact, since the beginning of agriculture, food could have been considered organic – it is just since 50 years ago that food production changed to use chemicals design to kill life. Moreover, the fertilizer used are derived from petroleum. Genetically modified seeds are pushed without long-term safety research – in fact the only long-term (2-years) study that I know on GMO shows link with cancer and but this infamous article has been debated heavily. Following that study, more countries have started their own private study on GMO safety and due to the length of the study to replicates we should at wait to 2017 and 2018 to see the results.

This page is for all of us who still don’t know the difference between the quality of products labelled organic versus conventional ones. You will be shocked !

Going organic for one week reduce by 89% the pesticide exposure

Source : http://www.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=e3hoqm8befvj1 A study from Australia shows again that indeed there is a difference between Organic versus Conventional products. Yes organic is better than conventional. Yes it is worth to pay more : << Conventional food production commonly uses organophosphate pesticides, which are neurotoxins that act on the nervous system of insects – and humans – by blocking an important enzyme, >> Dr Oates said. The amount of six organophosphate residues were being monitored in urine sample. It dropped by 89% in adults after only one week on a diet of at least 80% organic. Imagine 100% !

GM food toxins found in the blood of 93% of unborn babies

Source : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1388888/GM-food-toxins-blood-93-unborn-babies.html Independent doctors at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, at the University of Sherbrooke Hospital Centre in Quebec, Canada

Pete Riley said: << This research is a major surprise as it shows that the Bt proteins have survived the human digestive system and passed into the blood supply – something that regulators said could not happen. >>

Sub-lethal exposure to neonicotinoids impaired honey bees winterization before proceeding to colony collapse disorder

After what seemed like 5 years of waiting for the answer, we get another study confirming that neonicotinoids are responsible for the mass dying of bees. Of course neonicotinoids are banned in organic agriculture.
Source : http://www.bulletinofinsectology.org/pdfarticles/vol67-2014-125-130lu.pdf

Another important study have shown that fungicides concentration found in beewax seems to play a direct role in the bee colony’s survival chances.
Source: http://topexaminer.com/2016/10/08/honey-bee-colony-deaths-could-be-caused-by-safe-fungicides/

Yes, believe it or not, from the comfort of our home, we are living in the sixth vague of massive extinction. As you are taking your morning coffee, eggs n’ muffin next to a hot fire, a vague of massive extinction of species is undergoing. The last vague of massive extinction took away the dinosaurs !!

Now that deserve a little coverage, doesn’ it?

The most severe mass extinction occurred at the end of the Permian period when 96% of all species perished.

What could be causing this massive extinction. We’ve all heard of these issues years after years : loss of habitat (forests), increase in water pollution (accumulation of hundred of toxic substance found in rivers, lakes and seas around the world), military activities and radars underwater1. And what else we are unaware of? Even humans have hundred of toxic substance found in their fat cells and urine. Imagine what these chemicals would do to a much weaker organism.

Increase in temperature by 1 or 2 degree does not by itself cause massive extinction. But the combination of multiple effects can put species at risk and on top of that if you add heat-wave or rapid temperature drop, you ca (that is just an example).

As a population we are all aware that something is going bad, but we are so much trying to live our day-to-day chores that our lifestyles don’t allow us to pursue and confront the problem – more over if we do so we are considered dangerous terrorist – like Greenpeace activists.

One of the reason of extinction is water pollution. This is personally the problem that I find the most scary. Look at us human. To get a drink of water, we have to process it because our water has become so much polluted that we cannot drink directly from it. Not long ago, the Roman empire was bringing safe water into its city via aqueduct from natural sources. Take for example the St-Laurence river. There are thousand of manufactures pouring their waste-water into it, some of them neurotoxic substance, some other heavy metals. Yes there are chrome manufacture on the border of the St-Laurence river that throws away heavy metal into it. Native Americans whose diet is primarily fish from those place are dying from cancer and malformations. Image fragile wildlife – they don’t have sanitation equipment.

Moreover, rainfall can carry some of these toxic chemicals into wild forest. For example Atrazine.

Statistics

At threat are 41 percent of amphibian species, 33 percent of reef-building corals, 25 percent of mammals, 20 percent of plants and 13 percent of birds. 4

1. Stop doing your laundry

Well at least polyester and other plastic-based fabrics. Washing one pair of polyester clothes unleashes thousands of tiny plastic fibers in the water. Reaching the ocean, these plastic fibers also absorbs toxins and enter in the food-chain making their way back to your next cocktail party. So when you shop, avoid polyester altogether and go for cotton. Here are some interesting bedtime reading http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-16709045, <a title="Is Your Fleece Killing the Ocean? Why don’t they teach us this in school instead of mathematics? Also moving your body is advised because of the lymph. The lymph is liquid in your body that transports the virus-fighting cells, it has no pump, it moves around as the body moves. It makes a good difference when fighting infection to have the lymph circulate. Red Root herb (Ceanothus americanus) is a key herb to help the lymph. Another advice is to avoid meat temporarily when fighting illness. Don’t trust me, trust Dr. Greger (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/uprooting-the-leading-causes-of-death/).

3. Cut negative thoughts

I’m not saying to suppress them, but understand why you have them and figure a way to let them go. Above all, it’s the mind that is the strongest and its power — when used — has more precedence than the food you eat and the things you do. If you find yourself entertaining negative thoughts for more than a few minutes, stop and wonder, let these go before moving on. Do not let yourself bathe in worries. One of the best way to not entertain negative thoughts is to remove any sort of culpability on yourself and others.

Stop inhaling car fumes .4

Car fumes are strong neurotoxic – because of the additives in them. If you are pregnant, avoid car fumes. Always keep a safe distance from the car in front of you. If you are transiting through a very polluted area, put the air recirculation on *before* entering the area. This applies to North America at least. If you live in Europe for example, this does not apply because the gasoline there is much cleaner and has less dangerous additives.

5. Use biodegradable sunscreens
Don’t buy chemical-based sunscreens, buy biodegradable mineral-based sunscreens. Not only they are efficient but they don’t give you cancer and they don’t harm marine life. Read this “Use sunscreens that don’t harm our beautiful coral reefs. “ ! Chemical-based sunscreens harms marine life because of the chemicals inside as well as the nano-particles : one drop of nano-particle is enough to contaminate water the size of a Olympic swimming pool. Yipp.ca sells those sunscreen.

Cut milk .6
Did you know that milk causes osteoporosis. Yes and I repeat : milk accelerates the onset of osteoporosis. On the other hand, it is a true fact that milk accelerates the reparation of bones. This is done by accelerating the osteoblasts and osteoclasts action on the body. The osteoclasts dig up holes in the bone and is followed by an osteoblast cells that fill up with fresh new bone. The studies used by the milk industry to claim that milk gives you strong bones is based on these short-term studies. Unfortunately the osteoblasts (bone constructors) are limited in the lifetime of humans – much like the fixed ovules count in a women’s lifetime. Constantly accelerating this phenomenon by drinking milk year after year will make you run shorter osteoblasts sooner. The osteoclasts however do not vanish and will continue to dig-up holes in the bone at a rate that the osteblasts cannot fill ! This cause osteoporosis : bones full of holes. Even in 2012, doctors are still recommending to drink milk to women, go figure. To get the scientific researches and sources read this book called : Alimentation : Lait, mensonges et propagande.

7. Eat organic butter

It’s a well-known fact that the body stores in fat cells the toxic chemicals it cannot eliminate. The same thing happens to the animals. USDA pesticide residue tests has shown that there is not a single detected pesticide residue in animal’s muscle from the list of hundreds of tested pesticides – however it is found in alarming amount in fat tissues. The same alarming level of pesticides were found in butter. Neurotoxic pesticides. So why not cut on animal fat… or if you purchase anything containing animal fat : go organic. That’s a small step but with probably the biggest difference : by encouraging organic producers, you stop supporting Monsanto who would otherwise supply the corn, soy and the pesticides sprayed on the crops used to feed the animals.

Why use biodegradable cleaning products .8

Not only you will breathe cleaner air, but you will protect marine life. It is a total nonsense to pollute the water with non-biodegradable products. After all we drink that water. Water on the earth is the same one flowing 70 millions years ago drank by dinosaurs and caveman. Fortunately Earth has ways to purify water. Unfortunately we pollute at a rate so high that most people don’t have access to pure water – so are animals.

9. Watch out for electro-smog

Wi-fi and cellphones’s effects on our health are very real. They act like a general weakener. They weaken the blood-brain barrier (the thing that protects your brain from harmful chemicals). Take a look at numerious studies (http://scholar.google.ca/scholar?start=10&q=blood-brain+barrier+permeability+rats+emf) and also this one where they use EMF to help a medicament make it to the brain to fight AIDS. Electromagnetic radiations also plays a role in the melatonin-cortisone hormone balance, causing a decrease in melatonin and increase in cortisone. Melatonin help you sleep long nights and cortisone is a stress hormone. More info on melatonin can be found in “Mélatonine pour dormir“. Furthermore I have personally experienced that when you are on the edge of illness, it can be a triggering factor, which can be misleading for some sufferers as it is not the root cause. And to finish some people’s resistance to electromagnetic emissions can be shattered by accidents (strong exposition or low long-term exposition) and then be more affected by it.
