Soybean the “cheap protein”

Soy is very cheap to produce1,2 and offers a good amount of proteins3. From a business point of view this is great. From a health and social point of view, you will see later that it is rather a failure.

My opinion on soy

Soy is not a “healthy” food. It is a cheap source of proteins that has a good marketing machine behind it. Twelve years ago I read in details about soy plants and found that it was defending itself very well from insects with the various toxins it could produce. My guess back then was that it should not be consumed on the long-term. I was pretty sad hearing people telling me proudly they were drinking soy-milk for health-related considerations.

In the last few years I’ve seen circulating some studies indicating that soy was indeed not that healthy and that some of the toxins it produces are not destroyed by cooking, confirming my suspicions. My opinion on soy is that it is not evil and I wouldn’t be afraid to eat some but I would not label it as a health-food and not recommend its protein extract.

Natural plant defenses and toxins in soy

<< Unfermented soy contains “anti-nutrients” including estrogens, goitrogens, oxalates, phytates, protease inhibitors, saponins and soyatoxin. >>4

<< The protease inhibitors in soybeans are not only more numerous than those found in other beans and foods, but more resistant to neutralization by cooking and processing. >>5,6 Protease inhibitors can be a problem on the long-term.

In general many plant lectins can be broken down to a certain extent with cooking, and often almost all with a pressure cooker. The main problematic plant lectin in soy is agglutinin which can be reduced by fermentation and cooking. Some examples of plant lectins that cannot be broken down in a pressure cooker are wheat, oat, rye and barley [ref The Plant Paradox book, p180, 181].
<< Soybean agglutinin (SBA) is a major anti-nutritional factor that represents 5–7% of the soybean. (…) Although the biological activity of SBA can be reduced by proper heating, a considerable quantity is still found. This residual SBA can affect intestinal health by influencing intestinal structure, barrier function, the mucosal immune system, and the balance of the intestinal flora. >> https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5855776/

There is also a toxin in soy called soyatoxin that was found in 1994 and that appears to be highly toxic to mice. The researchers concluded that it is <<important to gather more information concerning its nutritional value, and to develop ways to counteract any detrimental effects. >>7

I could do more or less the same for a lot of edible plants, and this alone should not be a basis for indicating if it is “healthy” or not. What we need is scientific studies on humans that shows what happens when you eat the whole food – and not just an extracted single-component – over a long period of time.

Scientific studies on soy that show negative effects

Brain aging and midlife tofu consumption.
<< CONCLUSIONS: In this population, higher midlife tofu consumption was independently associated with indicators of cognitive impairment and brain atrophy in late life. >> http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10763906

Soy food and isoflavone intake in relation to semen quality parameters among men from an infertility clinic. << CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that higher intake of soy foods and soy isoflavones is associated with lower sperm concentration. >> http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18650557

Dietary soy protein and isoflavones have no significant effect on bone and a potentially negative effect on the uterus of sexually mature intact Sprague-Dawley female rats << Conclusion: These results suggest that dietary isolated soy protein and isoflavones have no effect on bone and the vagina during premenopausal period, but may have an adverse effect on the uterus.>> — http://journals.lww.com/menopausejournal/Abstract/2005/12030/Dietary_soy_protein_and_isoflavones_have_no.10.aspx

There is a great lack of human studies on whole soy / tofu. Any nutritional study on humans are really costly to make or never really conclusive since they are observational studies.

These are the great problems I find with nutritional studies on soy (and in general) :

Participants are not randomly chosen; then the individuals themselves decided to eat and food choice is usually associated with other confounding cultural habits that affect health;

Participants retrospectively report on what they ate (retrospective studies);

Studies in humans span less than a single generation.

Most studies are on partial soy extracts.

No studies compare organic versus non-organic soy unfortunately.

Bad science in pro-soy articles

Let’s go directly on the Soyfoods Association of North America website in a page where science is supposed to be found, let say in the Men’s health page where there is a lot of references : http://www.soyfoods.org/good-for-you-2/mens-health (viewed on August, 2014). It says << Human studies have found that males who consume soy have not had changes in sperm count, sperm quality or sperm motility. >> However if you take the time to look at the reference (Chavarro JE, Toth TL, Sadio SM, Hauser R. Soy food and isoflavone intake in relation to semen quality parameters among men from an infertility clinic. Hum Reprod 2008;23:2584-90.) which talks about semen quality, you will see the following conclusion in the cited study (which is the same study I previously cited in the previous paragraph!!) : << CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that higher intake of soy foods and soy isoflavones is associated with lower sperm concentration. >> (and that’s the only conclusion) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18650557 (Chavarro JE & al). Basically the only citation the Soyfoods association took is a partial extraction of results that suits their own interest and that goes against the study’s own conclusions.

Be careful about industry-funded articles!

Soy Isoflavone

https://lpi.oregonstate.edu/mic/dietary-factors/phytochemicals/soy-isoflavones

Soy and cancer

There is no link between cancer and soy. It is a plant from nature that has been eaten for thousands of years and human studies have not found a link between cancer and soy. On the contrary, Asian studies showed that soy was beneficial against cancer. My personal theory on that is that soy naturally contains phytic acid12 which is an iron chelator; and higher iron levels are associated with cancer; thus lowering of iron lowers cancer risks.

However studies in the US have not shown this beneficial trend. I didn’t find the explanation why, but my hypothesis – for what it is worth – is that either (i) Asians handle soy better and/or (ii) the soy grown in the US is different (pesticides), (iii) Asian eat fermented soy and whole plant instead of soy extracts, or (iv) GMO soy impacts the iron homeostatis. Note that in the US (along with UK and Canada) food is fortified with iron.

I will add a personal thought that it is time that scientists begin using organic versus non-organic version of food during testing to eliminate the effect of pesticide residues. My source is directly from cancer.org which I believe we can trust to be impartial toward the industry and in the best interest of the fight against cancer :
<< (…) a recent study combined data from 14 epidemiologic studies on this topic and found that in Asian countries, women who ate the most (compared to the least) soy isoflavones had a 24% lower risk of developing breast cancer, while there was no association in Western countries such as the U.S. >> and << Bottom line: Even though animal studies have shown mixed effects on breast cancer with soy supplements, studies in humans have not shown harm from eating soy foods. Moderate consumption of soy foods appears safe for both breast cancer survivors and the general population, and may even lower breast cancer risk. Avoid soy supplements until more research is done. So, enjoy your occasional tofu stir-fry or tofu burger – they are unlikely to increase your risk of breast cancer and, on balance, are some of the healthier foods you can eat! >> — http://www.cancer.org/cancer/news/expertvoices/post/2012/08/02/the-bottom-line-on-soy-and-breast-cancer-risk.aspx

Soy and Thyroid Function

<< Goitrogens, by definition, are substances that suppress the thyroid gland by interfering with thyroid hormone production. (…) Soy is one particular goitrogen that is especially detrimental for Hashimoto’s patients. (…) Soy has been linked with the development of autoimmune thyroid conditions, and children fed soy formula were almost three times more likely to develop anti-thyroid antibodies as compared with breast-fed children >> In the book Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis by Izabella Wentz, PharmD, FASCP and Marta Nowosadzka, MD., page 82. I am however very doubtful of the odd ratio of three times more likely as they probably didn’t take account of the added iron in infant formula. Elevated iron has been known for many years to increase incidence of thyroid injury followed by development of antithyroid antibodies and hypothyroidism[ref https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/article-abstract/603655].

Soy and Autoimmunity

2020. Reaction of Lectin-Specific Antibody with Human Tissue: Possible Contributions to Autoimmunity>/span>
https://doi.org/10.1155/2020/1438957
<< Wheat germ agglutinin-specific antibody was the most reactive with the tissue antigens (37 tissues out of 62), followed by red kidney bean phytohemagglutinin-specific antibody (20), soybean agglutinin-specific antibody (20), and peanut agglutinin-specific antibody (15). This reaction between anti-lectin antibodies and many human tissue antigens may be due to possible molecular mimicry and cross-reactivity. >>
<< The reaction of anti-lectin antibodies with human tissue components and their detection in RF-positive samples may describe mechanisms by which the production of antibodies against undigested lectins may contribute to the pathogenesis of some autoimmune diseases. >>

Dr. Steven R. Gundry, wrote a wonderful book on the subject of lectins and autoimmunity. I suggest anyone interested in nutrition to read it.

Soy and Allergies

The US Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) identifies soybeans as a “major food allergen.”

The Canadian Food and Drug Regulations have very similar provisions for the labeling of soy as a food allergen.

Highly refined soy oil however seems not to require labeling as a food allergen and does not appear to be associated with allergic reaction.

Plant biologist Mark Olson mentions in a Discovery Channel documentary that << (…) soy tends to be a fairly highly allergenic food. It causes allergies easily in many people. We think that this is because of the form that some of the proteins are in soy. >> https://youtu.be/L9tdLn_Zk1M?t=577

At 1:06:40, hear Dr. Garth Nicolson, PhD say that NT factors supplements created from soy can be safe even for people with allergies to soy.

How soy is used

Nearly all soybeans are processed for their oil. What remains is high-protein fibers9.

83% of the worldwide production of soy is used to feed animals10.

This means they first extract the oil, then process the rest into protein meal. If you think about it for a minute, that means most of the soy proteins sold on the market have chemical solvent residues from the oil extraction process.

Soybean production has exploded compared to other crops

Conclusions

My goal is to tell you that putting the same thing in your diet weeks after weeks, for more than a year is generally not a good idea unless it is really good – and soybean is not in that category. Soybean does not stand out from a health point of view. It does stand out from an economical point of view and as an industrial alternative to petroleum in the production of goods. The beneficial health effects reported are from fermented soybean.

Annexe 1 – These tactics could be used by industry funded article to get push their own agenda

Reduce the research scope, for example by reducing the length of the study to a few months instead of two or more generations.

Testing a single nutrient in an in-vitro research, e.g. on isoflavones, instead of a study on complete plant on human, then extrapolating that the full product is good and should be recommended by health practitioners.

Cherry-pick only some findings from a study and re-write a new article with only those – sometimes going against the conclusion of the original article. This is just like in the example above about by the Soyfoods Association of North America website. The industry just says that sperm mobility is unchanged but “forgets” to mention about the reduced sperm concentration.

Although from a rational point of view, growing organic is the only way that make sense, the majority of the population still don’t know what organic really is. In our mind, the way food is grown is not representative of reality.

The harsh chemical that our food grows in is in fact chemical warfare weapon designed during the war and later converted to agriculture products. In fact, since the beginning of agriculture, food could have been considered organic – it is just since 50 years ago that food production changed to use chemicals design to kill life. Moreover, the fertilizer used are derived from petroleum. Genetically modified seeds are pushed without long-term safety research – in fact the only long-term (2-years) study that I know on GMO shows link with cancer and but this infamous article has been debated heavily. Following that study, more countries have started their own private study on GMO safety and due to the length of the study to replicates we should at wait to 2017 and 2018 to see the results.

This page is for all of us who still don’t know the difference between the quality of products labelled organic versus conventional ones. You will be shocked !

Going organic for one week reduce by 89% the pesticide exposure

Source : http://www.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=e3hoqm8befvj1 A study from Australia shows again that indeed there is a difference between Organic versus Conventional products. Yes organic is better than conventional. Yes it is worth to pay more : << Conventional food production commonly uses organophosphate pesticides, which are neurotoxins that act on the nervous system of insects – and humans – by blocking an important enzyme, >> Dr Oates said. The amount of six organophosphate residues were being monitored in urine sample. It dropped by 89% in adults after only one week on a diet of at least 80% organic. Imagine 100% !

GM food toxins found in the blood of 93% of unborn babies

Source : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1388888/GM-food-toxins-blood-93-unborn-babies.html Independent doctors at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, at the University of Sherbrooke Hospital Centre in Quebec, Canada

Pete Riley said: << This research is a major surprise as it shows that the Bt proteins have survived the human digestive system and passed into the blood supply – something that regulators said could not happen. >>

Sub-lethal exposure to neonicotinoids impaired honey bees winterization before proceeding to colony collapse disorder

After what seemed like 5 years of waiting for the answer, we get another study confirming that neonicotinoids are responsible for the mass dying of bees. Of course neonicotinoids are banned in organic agriculture.
Source : http://www.bulletinofinsectology.org/pdfarticles/vol67-2014-125-130lu.pdf

Another important study have shown that fungicides concentration found in beewax seems to play a direct role in the bee colony’s survival chances.
Source: http://topexaminer.com/2016/10/08/honey-bee-colony-deaths-could-be-caused-by-safe-fungicides/

1. Stop doing your laundry

Well at least polyester and other plastic-based fabrics. Washing one pair of polyester clothes unleashes thousands of tiny plastic fibers in the water. Reaching the ocean, these plastic fibers also absorbs toxins and enter in the food-chain making their way back to your next cocktail party. So when you shop, avoid polyester altogether and go for cotton. Here are some interesting bedtime reading http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-16709045, http://www.motherjones.com/tom-philpott/2011/12/your-fleece-killing-ocean, http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/334341/title/Synthetic_lint_ends_up_in_oceans and http://coastalcare.org/2009/11/plastic-pollution/

Recover from sickess .2

Two simple things to do when facing illness such as a cold… and probably more serious illness : avoid sugar as it temporarily slows down the immune system. Why don’t they teach us this in school instead of mathematics? Also moving your body is advised because of the lymph. The lymph is liquid in your body that transports the virus-fighting cells, it has no pump, it moves around as the body moves. It makes a good difference when fighting infection to have the lymph circulate. Red Root herb (Ceanothus americanus) is a key herb to help the lymph. Another advice is to avoid meat temporarily when fighting illness. Don’t trust me, trust Dr. Greger (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/uprooting-the-leading-causes-of-death/).

3. Cut negative thoughts

I’m not saying to suppress them, but understand why you have them and figure a way to let them go. Above all, it’s the mind that is the strongest and its power — when used — has more precedence than the food you eat and the things you do. If you find yourself entertaining negative thoughts for more than a few minutes, stop and wonder, let these go before moving on. Do not let yourself bathe in worries. One of the best way to not entertain negative thoughts is to remove any sort of culpability on yourself and others.

Stop inhaling car fumes .4

Car fumes are strong neurotoxic – because of the additives in them. If you are pregnant, avoid car fumes. Always keep a safe distance from the car in front of you. If you are transiting through a very polluted area, put the air recirculation on *before* entering the area. This applies to North America at least. If you live in Europe for example, this does not apply because the gasoline there is much cleaner and has less dangerous additives.

5. Use biodegradable sunscreens
Don’t buy chemical-based sunscreens, buy biodegradable mineral-based sunscreens. Not only they are efficient but they don’t give you cancer and they don’t harm marine life. Read this “Use sunscreens that don’t harm our beautiful coral reefs. “ ! Chemical-based sunscreens harms marine life because of the chemicals inside as well as the nano-particles : one drop of nano-particle is enough to contaminate water the size of a Olympic swimming pool. Yipp.ca sells those sunscreen.

Cut milk .6
Did you know that milk causes osteoporosis. Yes and I repeat : milk accelerates the onset of osteoporosis. On the other hand, it is a true fact that milk accelerates the reparation of bones. This is done by accelerating the osteoblasts and osteoclasts action on the body. The osteoclasts dig up holes in the bone and is followed by an osteoblast cells that fill up with fresh new bone. The studies used by the milk industry to claim that milk gives you strong bones is based on these short-term studies. Unfortunately the osteoblasts (bone constructors) are limited in the lifetime of humans – much like the fixed ovules count in a women’s lifetime. Constantly accelerating this phenomenon by drinking milk year after year will make you run shorter osteoblasts sooner. The osteoclasts however do not vanish and will continue to dig-up holes in the bone at a rate that the osteblasts cannot fill ! This cause osteoporosis : bones full of holes. Even in 2012, doctors are still recommending to drink milk to women, go figure. To get the scientific researches and sources read this book called : Alimentation : Lait, mensonges et propagande.

7. Eat organic butter

It’s a well-known fact that the body stores in fat cells the toxic chemicals it cannot eliminate. The same thing happens to the animals. USDA pesticide residue tests has shown that there is not a single detected pesticide residue in animal’s muscle from the list of hundreds of tested pesticides – however it is found in alarming amount in fat tissues. The same alarming level of pesticides were found in butter. Neurotoxic pesticides. So why not cut on animal fat… or if you purchase anything containing animal fat : go organic. That’s a small step but with probably the biggest difference : by encouraging organic producers, you stop supporting Monsanto who would otherwise supply the corn, soy and the pesticides sprayed on the crops used to feed the animals.

Why use biodegradable cleaning products .8

Not only you will breathe cleaner air, but you will protect marine life. It is a total nonsense to pollute the water with non-biodegradable products. After all we drink that water. Water on the earth is the same one flowing 70 millions years ago drank by dinosaurs and caveman. Fortunately Earth has ways to purify water. Unfortunately we pollute at a rate so high that most people don’t have access to pure water – so are animals.

9. Watch out for electro-smog

Wi-fi and cellphones’s effects on our health are very real. They act like a general weakener. They weaken the blood-brain barrier (the thing that protects your brain from harmful chemicals). Take a look at numerious studies (http://scholar.google.ca/scholar?start=10&q=blood-brain+barrier+permeability+rats+emf) and also this one where they use EMF to help a medicament make it to the brain to fight AIDS. Electromagnetic radiations also plays a role in the melatonin-cortisone hormone balance, causing a decrease in melatonin and increase in cortisone. Melatonin help you sleep long nights and cortisone is a stress hormone. More info on melatonin can be found in “Mélatonine pour dormir“. Furthermore I have personally experienced that when you are on the edge of illness, it can be a triggering factor, which can be misleading for some sufferers as it is not the root cause. And to finish some people’s resistance to electromagnetic emissions can be shattered by accidents (strong exposition or low long-term exposition) and then be more affected by it.

Citrus solvent – biodegradable and non-toxic solvent

<< Unlike paint thinner, our Citrus Solvent does not cause damage to the internal organs of the body when breathed in; instead, it passes through without effect. As a matter of fact, when you drink orange juice from the store, you drink small amounts of Citrus Solvent in the form of oils from the orange peel from which the juice was squeezed! Of course, this does not mean to throw caution to the wind and celebrate by taking a healthy swig of solvent. >>
